[KMAG: FATHOM AUDIO PROMISE SOMETHING DIFFRENT]
Kmag caught up with Fathom Audio to discuss their new release, out 9th September on Diffrent Records. Sense MC gives us the inside track on the music on the single, and about their adventures on the radio.
What’s the make up of the Fathom Audio crew, and what does each member bring?
Sense: Billy (aka Billion) is the DJ so he usually brings technical stuff like a mixer and music to play. I’m an MC so I try and remember my microphone because I have found most other MC’s smell and have the lurgy. Codebreaker is the other guy that does rapping but he always brings it fresh with his Kindle whereas I use a pencil or a biro. Fybe is our ‘make things sound all fucked up and cool’ guy and also does drawings that make ours look foolish. We do have other friends but they’re not important right now. When we get together in the studio I want it to be like making soup and by that I mean I want everybody to bring some ingredients and actually make some soup. That’s not a metaphor. I literally want some soup.
Your new tracks are coming out on Diffrent. How did you organise getting the release out there?
Sense: I was friends with Hunchbak (one half of the Diffrent label bosses) for years before Diffrent was even formed. I’m very proud to have been involved with those guys since their inception. I have done various promo mixes with the guys and me and Hunchbak once did a mix where I wrote all new bars and he wrote all the music. Kept everything in-house as it were. I dunno how many people ever heard it but I’m still quite proud of the pair of us. The clue is in the title of course but as a label and an ethos they really are not the same as anyone else at 170. And that is why we love them. That and the giraffes of course. Dexta and Lunchbox have got some amazing people on board and with guys like Frederic Robinson, Arkaik, Shaded, et al anything is possible. We are very pleased to have finally made something just about ‘Diffrent’ enough for release. Only took us about 4 years too which actually isn’t bad for us.
The tracks are really something different, if you pardon the pun. Tell us about Promises and Ridges.
Sense: Ok… so, It feels like we made ‘Promises’ years ago but in reality was probably about 18 months or so. It’s one of them funny ones and doesn’t really fit in a viable box. The original idea was to make a tune with a hook but which never really ‘drops’ in a conventional sense. We think it kinda worked and I’ve still got a soft spot for it personally. My favourite thing about the tune is the fact that finally, after sending Hunchbak loads of tunes and being told that they sounded like a ‘gay Eastenders’ we eventually made a tune that was up to his stringent standards. Arkaik has done a dope remix too, which is a bit annoying as you always want your original to be the best version really, but you see that’s the thing about Arkaik, he makes really amazing tunes. We should’ve got someone less great to do it really.
As for Ridges? …. errr … Yeah me and Bill worked really hard on that tune, sweating away in a studio for days on end, sampling and resampling, only leaving the room for toilet breaks, searching for the ‘New Sound”……ok,… ok….I’ll be honest. Basically Fybe made that tune on his Jackie J’s. I don’t think I even heard it until it came back from mastering hahaha. I thought we were talking about another tune when we signed it. It didn’t matter though because almost everything Fybe ever makes is amazing and unique. Fybe is our friend and a vital part of Fathom Audio because he basically makes us all look cool as fuck. He’s one of those guys that is just sick at everything. He does all our artwork, is an internationally renowned graffiti artist, makes ridiculous tunes at 170, 130, 85 and most other numbers you can think of, got one played at the Olympics, makes music for Ninja Tune, super-hot and awesome wife, etc, etc…. Bastard. Luckily, he’s terrible at football or I probably wouldn’t even talk to him. Anyway, Fybe made this tune and we think everything he does is dope, so, that’s all gravy.
What’s the crack with your Kane FM radio show?
Sense: The crack is that we are still about and doing what we have always done. Standard. Poetry at 170. Kane FM 103.7 (www.kanefm.com) is the new home on Rotation (see what I did there?) with Subterra every other Sunday 6-9pm (GMT). Between us as a crew, over the last fifteen years, we have been involved with basically every important pirate radio station there ever was but now we’ve gone legit and we do our show on our local legal station. It’s all good. We’ve had some amazing guests pass through our show and the support we’ve had has been nuts. If we’re doing the name dropping thing then recently we’ve had the likes of Meth, Vicious Circle and FD on and guys like Es:tereo from Germany and John Rolodex repping Canada. We’ve got regular listeners on five continents and I suppose we’ll do it until it’s not fun anymore. We still do interviews so it’s usually funny though still. Paxman business. Al (Codebreaker) doesn’t do radio with us very often these days because finally people have stopped being mongs and made him a headline MC which is how I said it should be years ago. We are all very proud of him repping the team.
What’s the next move for the Fathom crew?
I’m planning on moving towards the pub and then towards the sofa. Dunno what Billy’s doing, I think he’s asleep as he’s got work in the morning. Fybe is living in a tree house with his dream woman I think and Breaker’s out living the dream. You know how we roll. I might even go fishing tomorrow. Oh yeah, and go buy the tune innit. The new one out soon on Diffrent. Go on. Don’t be out of order. Just buy it.
Finally, how is Leonard the pink giraffe?
He’s absolutely T for tremendous, thanks for asking
